Keep Marijuana Grow Ops Out of Your Neighbourhood

Getting to know your neighbours could help decrease crime in your community. Marijuana growing operations (MGOs) depend on anonymity. They move into communities quickly and quietly, hoping to go unnoticed. They are not interested in waving across the fence or borrowing a cup of sugar.

Ward 4 residents have raised concerns about the number of MGOs in their communities. MGOs are a serious safety hazard that put people and neighbourhoods across the city at risk. I recently met with residents of Edgemont to discuss strategies for eradicating MGOs and preventing them from taking root in our communities.

Preventing MGOs from establishing themselves in your neighbourhood requires individual and community action. Houses with MGOs often appear uninhabited or have unusual visitor behaviour. Covered windows, signs of condensation, odours, and power surges could all be indicators of an MGO. Pay attention to your neighbourhood surroundings.

The best way to eradicate MGOs is to report suspicious activities to the Calgary Police Services Drug Tip Line at 403-428-8100. They will investigate and take appropriate action. And don’t forget about the importance of getting to know your neighbours. You can start with a friendly “hello” over the fence. It’s that easy to establish a relationship, contribute to crime prevention and build a community network. You may also make new friends.

If you have a Ward 4concern, please contact my Community Assistant at 403-268-3727 or -Click here to send email-. For Ward 4 news and events, visit my website -Click here to visit website- or follow me on Twitter @yycGael.
